The study of the humanities can be traced back to ancient Greece period known as classical era or classical antiquity.
The classical era was the wellspring for philosophy, sculpture and painting, the art of drama, and the creation of great works of theater and writings in Western Civilization. Some of the most famous and influential contributions in various fields of liberal arts were from the ancient Greek world, including dramas of Sophocles and the philosophical schools of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.
During this era, education of the seven liberal arts evolved was considered essential for a free citizen to study grammar, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music.
The period of middle Ages prepared individuals for careers in the church, business, law and education. In medieval times seven liberal arts subjects were divided into two parts known as the Trivium (Grammar, Rhetoric, logic) and Quadrivium (Arithmetic, Geometry, Astronomy, and Music).
Early 15th century, period of Renaissance truly reformed the study of humanities (studia humanitatis). To revive the glory and dignity of the ancient past concept of humanities, these scholars eagerly studied classical literature, architecture, and sculpture.
